WHAT IS THE HEALING LIGHT PROJECT?
The Healing Light Project is a project with its roots beginning in 2015. Rahel received a simple Facebook request from a Zimbabwean musician living in South Africa. His reason for writing? To raise awareness through music about his love for Africa. "Yes", he said, "Africa IS a place where there is much poverty, crime, disease and racism but there is more than that to Africa." His song, PEACE, a song we recorded as part of our first collaboration, sings about this.
Africa is a place where this one man, together with nine additional vocalists, is trying to let people know about another Africa - the Africa filled with loving friends and family - regular people who are trying to live regular lives just like most people in the world. This one man, Mr. Future Moyo, sent letters to many musicians, most of whom either ignored his outreach or simply wished him well. Then it happened. Rahel, received his letter and got curious. Who is this? What does he want? Why me? Music? Okay, sounds good.
Rahel is a Jewish singer songwriter who writes very good music. You know that's true because people smile a lot when they hear it. They get calmer, more relaxed. They blow her kisses and tell her how beautiful the music is. Rahel tells her audiences that it's okay if her music inspires them to doze off and even sleep (yes, that's a good thing!). As a Certified Therapeutic Healthcare Artist Rahel encourages time out from busy and stressful lives. After a good rest one is refreshed and uplifted.
Rahel was thrilled to learn more about Mr. Future Moyo and his vocal group, Amavevane Acapella. They started out as a soccer team. Apparently they were not very good. Their coach advised them to try music which they did. When you hear them and see what they are doing in performance you will be stunned. They will wow you with their beautiful harmonies and dancing - all representing traditional music from Africa and specifically from Zimbabwe where they hail from.
Rahel and Future connected easily but having been warned by many that South Africa was not a safe place she was still a bit reluctant to make the trip. Rahel is not one to give up. She did a lot of research, asked South African friends about it and talked a lot with Future. In the end they agreed to go ahead with a collaborative project that would begin in Africa. MUSIC would pave the way. Rahel and Future knew that music always provides only good things and believed that this time would be no different.
Future and Rahel soon realized they both shared similar aims and objectives and so they co-founded THE HEALING LIGHT PROJECT. In March 2017 Rahel traveled to South Africa to launch their first collaborative effort. Rahel's son traveled with her to film and document the events. Two additional musicians were included in Africa; Singer-Songwriter Toby Tobias and a budding young rapper, Isiyaking from the Yoga4Alex organization. You can view photos, video clips and hear two songs that were recorded together as part of the project.
So what happened?
It turned out that this endeavor was much more than just a few musicians from across the world getting together to make music. Rahel admits that a trip to Africa was not on her radar at that time. However, it ended up to be a wonderful gift. Meeting Future, the group members, their families, community and home country was an enormous eye opener for her and them. Yes, they saw the poverty, crime and all the rest. But they were hosted by absolute angels and treated like royalty.
Working together was the easy part. Learning about life in Africa, especially about a people encompassing love, honor and respect was a gift. On their part, their eyes were opened to Rahel's Jewish culture, traditions and music. This, too, was not on their radar when they started the project. Neither was a trip to Israel! In fact everyone admitted that they had reservations about how they would even be able to make their very different musical styles work together. Yet, here they are.
The second event of THE HEALING LIGHT PROJECT was a tour in Israel. Rahel traveled to Israel for her daughters' wedding and then proceeded to organize the tour. It was clearly meant to be because eight concerts and workshops seemed to fall into place effortlessly. They included: house concerts, folk clubs, schools and a museum. The response from the Israeli audiences was ecstatic. They loved each individual presentation and were moved by the songs that were presented collaboratively by the two acts. Local musicians were featured as well, both individually and those who came in with additional songs performed by all. School children and their staff were inspired to feel more confident and proud about their own heritages and a group of special needs young adults experienced an opportunity to express themselves freely in response to the music.
In the end what started as a simple outreach to musicians turned out to be the meeting of worlds. Rahel, Future, the members of Amavevane Acapella and those who joined the effort have set forth to prove that people may be different in the language they speak, the way they live, the food they eat and their cultural traditions but in the end, as said so eloquently by young 11 year old Brandon said after seeing the concert, "In the end we are all the same. We're just people".
If that message got through to Brandon then their goals have been achieved. The future indeed looks brighter already!
Music is the vehicle. These musicians are actively following their dreams realizing that they have a purpose on this earth that is much larger then them. They are building the bridges that connect people to one another. hey are creating the pathways for coming together, people to people, to build strong and lasting friendships across oceans. These are the first steps towards creating a better and more peaceful world!
